The best staycations in Benelux

Staycations are becoming the next best thing due to constantly changing COVID restrictions. With limited options left, staying within your borders is not only becoming the new normal, it’s also the most sustainable and affordable way to enjoy a vacation.

Take the family out on a weekend getaway in your home country and stay at one of the many unique campspaces available to you. They’re cheaper than hotel rooms and surrounded by plenty of nature to explore and keep the whole family busy.  that are cheaper than a plane ticket or even a hotel room.

Embrace the opportunity to see your country as never before! Book a cosy campspace and invite your loved ones — go explore the nearby villages, nature parks, backcountry roads, beaches, and other attractions. 

It’s easy to get stir-crazy or antsy with constantly changing COVID policies — taking a staycation might be the way to stay sane. We’ve compiled a list of staycation ideas throughout Benelux that will help you live your best life even during these challenging times.

Belgium

Durbuy is located at the foot of the Ardennes and is known for being the smallest city in the world. This mediaeval town is home to stunning boutiques, delicious food, a breathtaking castle, crazy geology, all while being surrounded by amazing nature.

Where to stay? 

  • Tony & Nadine’s camping room is located in Durbuy and just a stone's throw away from the Ardennes. With many activities to do nearby such as quad-biking, hiking, and exploring - this campspace is suitable for the whole family!

 

Reading Between the Lines, located in Limburg country, is a metallic church art installation. Perched on top of the fields surrounding Borgloon, this optical illusion built by Gijs Van Vaerenbergh in 2011 is called Reading Between the Lines because from certain angles, the church will look transparent and in other angles it will look solid.

Where to stay? 

  • Jan’s glamping site is approximately 20 minutes by car to Reading Between the Lines, with much to see in between. This glamping site houses a small herd of donkeys that are always looking for an excited family to go with them on a tour of the Small and Large Gete Valley!

 

Netherlands

The Biesbosch is considered one of the last extensive tidal river delta areas in northwestern Europe.The national park boasts a plentitude of flora and fauna which can be spotted on a beaver boat tour or on the park's extensive bike routes.

Where to stay? 

  • Anne, Erik, Wende and Otis’s wild garden is a perfect stop for any cyclist. Located across the river from the Biesbosch, this campsite is approximately 20 minutes biking from a bike ferry or boat rental company to take you to the National Park.

The Van Gogh bike path is a unique solar powered path that lights up when it's dark to expose Van Gogh’s The Starry Night. Located in Eindhoven, the path marks the location where Van Gogh lived between 1883-1885. The path is 600 metres long and was designed by artist Daan Roosegaarde using thousands of twinkling coloured stones.

Where to stay? 

  • Coen’s community farm is a great place to relax. They offer yoga and transcendental meditation retreats throughout the year as well as a space to reconnect with people, animals and nature in this back to basics, sustainable garden campspace. They are also located 15 minutes by car from the Van Gogh bike path which makes it the ideal place to stay after enjoying the incredible art installation.

Luxembourg

Where to stay? 

  • Miranda’s garden is located in the eastern side of Luxembourg which makes it the perfect starting point for any day trip! Her backyard is perfect for the whole family with a trampoline, playset, and kitchen. Make Miranda’s garden your homebase for any Luxembourg staycation.

Kirchberg plateau is a district in Luxembourg city and showcases

many works of art scattered around the district. Take an art tower or climb The Dendrite which is a seven-metre tall structure designed by Michel de Broin in the centre of a maze. The design   encourages  passersby to climb the sculpture to admire the other works of art in the area.

Chateau Esch-sur-Sûre is located at the base of the Sûre river. With only consolidated ruins remaining, the castle still boasts a proud history. With amazing views, the castle is worth visiting after a swim in the Sûre river. 



It’s easy to get bogged down by the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Taking a staycation to relax and explore your own country might be worth doing!
