Mata do Vagar – a private off-grid forest sanctuary by the stream
Hidden between the mountains and the ocean, Mata do Vagar is a small cryptomeria forest shaped by time, water and quiet intention.
A year and a half ago, this place was carefully rediscovered and gently prepared to become a space for stillness, reflection and reconnection with the natural world. Fallen trees were cleared, simple paths opened beneath the tall canopy, natural steps were shaped into the slope, and a small clearing was created for gathering around fire and conversation.
A clear mountain stream runs along the edge of the forest, its sound present throughout the day, creating a rare sense of continuity and calm. A small pond reflects the surrounding trees and changing light, while a simple outdoor bathroom was built with respect for the landscape and its rhythms.
The forest offers complete privacy and an atmosphere of deep quiet — a place suited for slow travel, contemplation, reading, meditation, writing, or simply being present.
Mata do Vagar is entirely off-grid. There is no electricity, no artificial lighting and no digital noise. Only the sound of water, wind through the trees and the shifting light filtering through the canopy.
Originally envisioned as a sanctuary for small retreats, yoga practice or nature-based stays, the space remains intentionally minimal, allowing each visitor to shape their own experience.
This is not a conventional campsite, but a living place with character — simple, quiet and grounded.
Mata do Vagar invites those who value silence, autonomy and a respectful relationship with nature.
Here, time slows down.
Guests can set up their tent within a private clearing inside a mature cryptomeria forest. The ground is mostly level, composed of compact soil and natural forest floor, with suitable areas for small to medium-sized tents (1–4 persons).
The tall trees provide consistent natural shade throughout the day, while still allowing soft filtered light to reach the clearing. The surrounding vegetation offers protection from wind and creates a comfortable microclimate.
The space is accessed on foot via a short forest path that includes natural terrain, wooden steps and a shallow stream. Access requires good mobility and is not suitable for wheeled equipment.
Due to the terrain and ecological sensitivity of the site, the space is suitable only for tents or lightweight camping setups.
Motorhomes, campervans and caravans are not possible.
The entire forest area is reserved for one booking at a time, ensuring privacy and a quiet environment. Guests are free to choose their preferred spot within the clearing.
Facilities include:
• outdoor toilet cabin
• picnic table
• fire pit with log seating
• small natural pond
• forest paths
As the space is fully off-grid, guests should come prepared with their own lighting, drinking water and camping equipment.
The environment is intentionally kept simple to preserve the natural character of the forest and the sense of retreat it offers.
