Planning an adventure trip in your campervan

Planning an adventure trip in your campervan

Are you up for adventure travel and exploring in a campervan? Then you’ve come to the right place: this guide is all you need to plan a successful adventure trip in your campervan, courtesy of Campspace van-lifers Rick and Laura, aka Simply Nomads.

We are Rick & Laura and we’ve been travelling around in our camper for about a year and a half. We did this in a Fiat Doblo and now we have a 1992 Mercedes Benz. We love adventure travel and let our intuition determine our route. We often don’t know exactly where we’re going, but always end up in the most beautiful places nonetheless. This way of travelling by camper is not for everyone. For that reason, we’ve outlined a complete guide to adventuring in your campervan featuring trips that last between two weeks and half a year. Let's go!

Choosing an adventure destination

Of course you can fly to destinations all over the world by plane to experience adventure. But in Europe there is still so much to see and discover. For example, we’ve been to Spain and Portugal, but also to lesser known countries such as Poland and Bulgaria with our campervan. The moment you step out of your comfort zone, you’ll see that the adventure comes your way.

Whether there are Campspace locations available in your country or not, you’ll always be able to find unique locations to set up camp. You can also look for parking spaces at churches, parks or beaches where you can watch the sun set

What’s the budget?

Before we leave, we always determine the budget for our trip. Sometimes it’s determined by what money we have left over from our last adventure trip. This type of trip could be a beautiful low-budget hike with a cup of coffee and a cake afterwards. But in many mountainous areas it’s also possible to go rafting or if you’re by a body of water,  to take a beautiful boat trip and go diving.
We know how to save costs during our travels by looking for cheap places to stay. If you have a solar panel and enough water, you can just stand off-grid in some countries. Campspace, where you can often park or camp in the gardens of locals for cheap, is also an economical solution. Sometimes it also happensthat we are simply invited to people's gardens!

Adventurous campervan overnight stays

Rather than  campsites, we personally prefer to look for remote and natural places. We often find these via Campspace. We have listed three for you in countries such as Denmark, Germany and Belgium.

Denmark: Röringe's micro camping

In the beautiful Småland you will find this campsite near Catarina in the garden. You can park beside a  beautiful lake with your camper and imagine yourself in the middle of nature. Ask about the possibilities for canoeing in the area.

Germany: Green Timeout

Not far from Berlin you will find the island of Heike. From this place you can take advantage of all the fun  Berlin has to offer. A bit of urban exploration never goes amiss on an adventure trip.

Belgium: Little peaceful forest

If you really want to get away from everything and everyone, then this is the place to go. In the middle of the woods in East Flanders you will find this campspace, where you can completely relax with only the basic facilities.

Adventure in your own camper

You would think that adventure travel only takes place on foot but you can also experience adventure when riding in your campervan. You can play an adventurous game of Carcassonne or Settlers of Catan, you can make a fire next to your camper or you look for an adventure film for a good movie night. For your next adventure-themed evening in your camper,  why not check out these films:

14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible

This documentary is about a mountaineer, Nimsdai Purja, who climbed all 14 8,000 meter peaks in seven months. No one has ever accomplished this. A very compelling documentary that makes you want to go exploring in the mountains. Watch 14 peaks: Nothing is Impossible here.

Into the Wild

This film just makes you want to leave society behind and go into the woods. With a backpack, Jon Krakauer leaves for the unknown after graduating. He burns his money and goes in search of the wilderness. A true and gripping story that you must see if you are an adventure lover. Watch Into the Wild here.

Expedition Happiness

Do you want to see how adventure travel works in your camper? Felix and his girlfriend Taibi go on a trip through America in their self-built school bus. They take you through the construction, but also how the journey does not always go according to plan. As a motorhome owner,  a must-see. Watch Expedition Happiness here.

Adventure travel is possible every day

Now we have given you all kinds of tips for an adventure trip with the camper. But did you know that you can have an adventure every day? You really don't have to go to the most remote places in the world for this. Book at one of the hundreds of Campspace places near you and discover that you can go on an adventure at any time of the week. We believe that an adventure is only complete with a smile –only then will every destination be beautiful.|
