About this location

At the back of our edible fruit garden, we offer space for up to two small tents. One spot is located near the pagoda, and the other between the raspberry and plum trees. The spots are not far apart but are sheltered at the back of the garden, with raspberry bushes, fruit trees, and greenery in between, creating a sense of peace and privacy. From the house, the spots are usually barely visible. As of recently, our garden is no longer a naturist site. This is due to the presence of the TerraKota: a small-scale temporary shelter in our garden. When the TerraKota is not in use for shelter, it can also be booked as a unique place to stay overnight. If the temporary resident has no objection, we remain open for the two small tent spots as well. We consciously choose peace, a small-scale setting, and a safe, respectful atmosphere for everyone staying here. Leon, our European eagle owl, lives at the very back. The chickens live next to him. Sometimes pheasants walk through the garden or a heron comes to visit the pond. The garden is full of birds and insects, and you can hear the sounds of country life. That means no city noises, but barking dogs in the distance, a crowing rooster, birds flying overhead, and sometimes neighbors doing odd jobs or children playing. All of this is part of life in the Drenthe countryside. We have a dog ourselves: Zorro, a black Giant Schnauzer. If you want to bring a dog, it is important that your dog is social and enjoys meeting other dogs. You can use a wheelbarrow to transport your belongings to your spot. Garden chairs and seating are available for guests. There is a covered outdoor kitchen where you can cook, do the dishes, and enjoy the evening sun. Cold drinking water is available in the garden, located at the outdoor shower (using groundwater) inspired by the Wim Hof method — which we use almost daily ourselves. Drinking water can also be obtained at the covered outdoor kitchen. Or in the garage. Within cycling distance are the Drouwenerzand nature reserve, the village of Borger with the Hunebed Centre, and the shops of Stadskanaal. You will be staying at ONS Kantelhuis, a project of the Herkansing Foundation. With your stay, you indirectly contribute to making a temporary shelter possible for people who need a safe transitional space. We make our own products from the fruit in our garden, such as jam, applesauce, tapenade, and other delicacies. We also bake bread from special grains, including ancient grains and grains from France and Italy. Come and enjoy peace, space, nature, and a place built with attention and care. Welcome to our Kanteltuin.

We are Quinta and Max. Together, we live in a large edible garden, built according to permaculture principles, where peace, nature, and hospitality take center stage. In our garden, we welcome guests on a small scale: sometimes campers, sometimes people staying temporarily in the TerraKota, a small space for rest, recovery, and catching their breath. When the TerraKota is not in use as a shelter, it can also be booked as a unique place to stay overnight. With your stay, you contribute to the Herkansing Foundation and to making this place possible. You can find more about this via ONS Kantelhuis, and of course, we would be happy to tell you more about it when you are here. Quinta works as a researcher and lecturer at the Research Group on Client Perspective in Support and Care and is chair of the European Anti Poverty Network Netherlands. So, we are certainly a bit idealistic. But above all, we find it important to create a place where people can feel welcome, free, and away from the hustle and bustle for a while. You are very welcome to join us in enjoying our little piece of paradise in the Drenthe countryside.
