Sustainable, eco-friendly stays on a small farm in Casal dos Feros.

Holidays by the sea are a pretty surefire way to boost your happiness – and there’s an added feelgood factor for those staying at Lugar Do Sol, a peaceful rural spot in Casal dos Feros, just under two kilometres from Santa Cruz beach.

Stays here are in a natural retreat that provides a peaceful haven on a small farm well away from the noise of the resort (and yet within easy walking/biking distance of the sands). The place is set up according to ecological, sustainable and self-sufficient practices – water comes from a well, energy is generated through solar panels and food is harvested from the organic garden.

Guests are welcome to help themselves to a little bit of whatever’s available in the garden and take it over to the covered outdoor kitchen, which has an oven, a hob and plenty of other bits and bobs for cooking (along with a table for eating your meals). There are plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants for other ingredients, or times when you’d prefer to eat out.
Compost toilets, solar-heated showers, a washing-up area and recycling facilities are also available for guests – and, for a little downtime on site, there’s also a plunge pool, a small play area and hammocks hung among the trees for a lovely shaded siesta.

Presumably you’ve primarily chosen this area for its beaches? That’s fair enough, given that this stretch of coast has some fabulous ones to choose from. The nearest is Praia de Santa Cruz, about a 10-minute bike ride/25-minute walk from the site. The long sandy stretch is great for strolls, sunbathing and surfing (there’s a surf school in town) but the waves might be a bit too much for many swimmers.

If it’s calmer waters you're after, head a little way north to Praia de Porto Novo (10 minutes’ drive/20 minutes’ cycle), which is a more sheltered spot for swims, paddleboarding and canoeing. If, on the other hand, you’re more in search of an adrenaline hit, you can have a go at paragliding over the cliffs at Praia de Santa Rita (10 minutes’ drive/20 minutes’ cycle) or try flying a plane from Aérodromo de Santa Cruz (five minutes’ drive or cycle ride).

To expand your horizons a little further, it’s certainly possible to sort day trips to places like Sintra and Lisbon (both an hour's drive away), visit the castle and churches of medieval Óbidos (45 minutes) or take tours of the area’s wineries (several within a half-hour drive).

This was truly a hidden gem place!

It has authentic spirit, love towards nature and all natural ways. 

Nuno and Kathy are great, generous people, and we are at most happy we had the privilege to meet them, know them and spend a week with them at their lovely home.

How was the contact with the host?
Very responsive, and answering all my questions (I had a lot).

Nuno even picked us up from the main road since it was dark!

Tips for new guests?
If you want to meet new alternative people and be at are relaxed atmosphere this is the place for you.

They have their own special shampoo, soap and shower gel that are with all natural ingredients so you don’t damage the earth around.

We had an amazing time at this place ! There is a nice energy around and we met great people as well. We stayed another night. There are different spots to hang out and their products they offer in the shower are made by his girlfriend and their just amazing and smell so good. This place feels like a small hippie family of yours.

How was the contact with the host?
It was a bit complicated at first to communicate trough chat (It think because the host was out of town) but once on site, everything went well and he was a very welcoming person.
