Your host, Lothar

In 1926, the then general director of Thyssen built the Bräke fish farm in the scenic Grünertal in Iserlohn. The facility was used to breed and rear salmonids (trout-like fish). The fish farm flourished until the 1950s. After that, the fish farm became quieter due to several sales and changes of tenants.

Lothar Primus, born on December 1st, 1965 in Iserlohn, is a fish farmer. In 1987, he took over a partially abandoned fish farm in Iserlohn. In the first few years, the main task was to rebuild the ponds for salmonid production and direct marketing with a smokehouse. In 1991, a pond facility and branch operation for edible fish production was leased. In order to increase production and gradually expand his product range, he began breeding salmon and the first sturgeon in 1993. After very successful breeding of some sturgeon species, the breeding was expanded to include ornamental fish, in particular koi carp of Japanese origin.

The success made it necessary to convert the Primus fish farm in 1997, with several new buildings and large outdoor pools, into one of the most modern recirculation plants. This phase of conversion was completed in 2002 with a warm water circulation plant for the production of sturgeon and koi carp. In 2003, the Iserlohn site was expanded with the construction of a new presentation hall with a focus on koi carp. In 2005, the expansion of sturgeon production made it necessary to build another recirculation plant with a volume of 1 million liters of water. The plant was put into operation in 2006. At the same time, in 2006, the expansion of the plant construction business for aquaculture, particularly recirculation plants, began. The first recirculation plants were built in Switzerland.

In 2007/08, several plants were also planned in Romania and built by Fischgut Primus Anlagenbau. With the commissioning of the first warm water circulation system, Lothar Primus Fischgut Primus received the first diploma for sturgeon farming in modern aquaculture in Romania. Presented by the President of BANAT STURIO, Dr. Dipl. Ing. LAZU DOREL.

In 2009, a large carp production facility was planned and implemented in the Danube Delta. Several halls were converted for the hatching and rearing of up to 1,000,000 carp per batch and equipped with the latest filter technology from Fischgut Primus Anlagenbau, so that the supply of young carp can be guaranteed all year round and regardless of the weather for the 1000ha outdoor facility (carp/scale carp/silver carp and bighead carp).

Based on his experience in fish plant construction, especially with maintenance-free biological filters, Lothar Primus developed the modular filter (a smaller copy of the large biological filters) for smaller fish farms and quarantine systems for koi carp.

Maintenance-free modular filters of various series for garden ponds are now sold worldwide

Further projects were planned and implemented in Russia, the Philippines, Vietnam, etc.

Further investment was also made at the Primus fish farm, and from 2010 onwards new and more modern facilities for aquaculture were built. The focus here was on the reproduction (propagation) of various fish species such as mirror carp, scale carp, pikeperch, catfish, salmonids, various ornamental fish species and, of course, sturgeon and koi as staple fish.
