Super-fun experience. They are always present with a lot of attention and have a fire plate to build a campfire. Adorable and exploratory. Although 1 shower (well looked after) and 1 toilet (although well looked after) could use a new investment, taking into account if 7 kids (the Archies and the Burgies) come giggling in the garden. It was good and it doesn't have to be more. René with Sarina, Pip and Marc.

The campspace in Oppagne, Durbuy was a beautiful garden. You could pick apples from the trees which was nice. The owners were very friendly and helpful. There are other guests on the site, but we have had no problems with that. Everyone chooses their own spot, so you can also move a little further from the other guests if you want it a bit quieter. Sanitary facilities are provided where strict hygiene rules apply, which is indispensable in these times. Everything was very clean. There is also a small fridge, which is always handy.

Unfortunately our trip not resulted as expected. Nadine and Tony were very helpful before arrival and told us what to bring and what not. When we arrived, Nadine showed us the tipi tent, which is a very nice and spacious tent, just as on the picture, but it was not located in the shadow as shown in the online picture, something that convinced us to book in the first place as we knew it would be hot! The tipi was located in full sun during the entire day, not possible to stay in when sun is out. We travelled with our two kids, from 5 and 3 years old, so were really looking for a place to be able to relax in the afternoon.

The garden is very big and has beautiful view, but close to the house there was a sewage odor which made us feel lucky that we had to where the mouth mask.

When you take a look at the online pictures you would think that the tipi is alone with a few tents of other guests, which seemed perfect for us in post-corona-lockdown-times. Unfortunately it was not…there where over 30 people using only one (!) WC and one (!) shower (is this even allowed legally?), which had to be desinfected by ourselves, which is OK, but we never saw the hosts desinfect it themselves and more profoundly than the guests would do…which made us feel unsafe.

The second last night our daughter got sick at night and we therefore decided to go home one day earlier than planned. We would have liked to be reimbursed for the last night as we paid € 90,00 for not using the tipi, which is already a high sum if you take into account the poor sanitary installation.

Conclusion: we would not go back and recommend Nadine and Tony to foresee more WC’s and showers for the number of guests that they are accepting. The garden is beautiful, but it would be so much better to have less guests (although this brings less money, which we think is of a big importance for Nadine and Tony). And if they will keep on accepting the amount of guests that they are accepting now, they should post some pictures, showing the garden full of tents and, even more important, pictures of the sanitary installation.

We would still like a response from Nadine or Tony about the reimbursement of the last night. We have not received anything yet, although our stay was from 04-07.08.2020, almost 14 days ago

Thank you so much for your remarks Eline, Alejandro, lovely children Bastian and Lenna (& doggy Balam)

You do have some good points !

Yes indeed, the tipi is not on the spot where it's shown on the picture in the listing, it has been moved to another place where there's a lot more space, a broad view over nature and the wonderful sunset, and extra space to have a large private terrace.

In full shade until about 14u - at the time that you were staying, meanwhile it's until about 15u - and with some nice shady spots right next to it the whole day where you spent your time with the children and doggy Berner Senner on the occasions when you were present.

I do agree we should adjust the pictures as also recommended by other guests who said everything was so much better in reality as it shows on the photo's

The unfortunate thing about the tipi's present location is that the shady spots are completely wind-free and of course with the temperatures at the time you were staying that didn't help...

That's why we suggested to go sit somewhere else in the large garden where you at least could have a bit of a breeze, but you said you prefered to stay where you were.

Which is your free choice of course :-)

Amazing how you knew it was going to be hot from 4-8 of august already on the 21st of July though !

Also we totally agree that 20 guests (not 30 and including you 4) for 1 WC and 1 shower as required by law isn't really comfortable enough.

That's why we already have extra WC's in the make, they should be ready soon (we hope :-p)

Luckily enough on your 2nd and 3rd night you were with only 14/15 people in total, including yourselves ;-)

But yes indeed, there were another 4 tents on the +4000m2 available

It is really unfortunate that Lenna (3jr) has been sick the night before your 1 day earlier departure (3 instead of 4 nights) as she had eaten something wrong - as you told us yourself...

Despite the fact that doesn't really have anything to do with us, we will gladly return you the money for the night you didn't stay in the tip, but it would have been nice if only you would have asked or suggested at the time ?

However, we're still willing to pay you back the full amount, no problem at all !

We'll arrange it with Campspace :-)

Oh and about the 'less-then-interesting' smell....

Yes, also there you are absolutely right !

Thank goodness our neighbours have found the problem and are now working to get it solved !

Must admit, it is 'a bit' of a .... heeuu... 'less interesting experience' isn't it 🙃

We do indeed ask our guests to help protect each other's health by helping to disinfect when the last one of the 'bubble' uses the sanitary :-)

Of course you didn't see us disinfect :thoroughly though - you weren't there... ;-)

Tony and/or I do this multiple times a day but of course not when there's people using the sanitary at that moment ; then we do it 'lightly' because we don't want to disturb their privacy or 'stop' anyone from going to the WC or shower.

Usually we do the thorough jobs during the day when everybody is out (including you), after 20u, before we go to bed at .round about 1u at night and than again as from 7 in the morning.

Guess you were a sleep at that time ?

Funny by the way and in that context how you forgot to mention the double boxsprings we put up especially for you, but I guess that's a detail ;-)

And last but not least...

We are sure you noticed during your stay we have got at least double the amount of space to host more camperguests in comparison with what we offer.

So if we would do it for the money... ?

All things said, we just want to share our garden and joy of life.

Really sorry we couldn't provide that for you.

Again, thanks for your feedback !

This Campspace has a really beautiful garden, with nature, privacy and coziness. It's clear that this host has a lot of experience with adventurous travelers. It's a spacious campsite close to the forest, with even some wildlife. This Campsite is situated in the middle of the Ardennes, so the nights are really dark, which leaves room for breathtaking starry skies. We ended the night with a campfire and a view to die for.

I’d like to take a moment to write a review because we were a little disappointed after our first experience with Campspace. Often the location of regular campsites in the Ardennes is less beautiful and the pitches are close together so that you experience less privacy and tranquillity in the season. We therefore used Campspace for our last camping trip because we were mainly looking for peace, space, and nature. There is little to criticise on the site itself, it is beautifully situated and the garden itself offers a beautiful natural environment. The pictures on the hosts page also faithfully reflect this. What disappointed us, however, was the large crowds on this Campspace. I have to admit I only saw afterwards on the hosts page that up to 14 people are allowed to camp. However, when we arrived it was busier than that. I definitely estimate more than 20 people including one large group. In addition, there are also guests of the B&B rooms that are rented out and who also use the terrace which is located in the garden. I thought beforehand that it was a small-scale place with private individuals, as I had also conceived the concept of Campspace. So this was not the case, and a disappointment for us as this is not clear based on the hosts page. I realise that last weekend was probably exceptionally busy in the Ardennes (extended weekend in Belgium, nice weather forecasts, a lot of domestic tourism by Corona), but it was just this busyness that we wanted to avoid by using Campspace. Additional disappointment: there was a large gang present with the guests who were talking loudly around a campfire until after midnight, in the evening also with amplified music from a bluetooth box. On the page of the hosts it was stated that people are asked to respect the rest after 10 pm, but this was not maintained. Obviously we have nothing against people who have fun around a campfire and drink a beer, but I do not think large groups fit in with the concept of Campspace as we understood it. So it was difficult to sleep, luckily we had earplugs. The large crowds also meant that the plumbing in our opinion was not sufficient. There is only 1 toilet, 1 shower and 1 sink. The sanitary was very primitive, but fortunately clean. We would have appreciated if we could have seen some pictures of the sanitary on the hosts page beforehand, and if there was more detailed information about the sanitary.

We also had to pay extra for the purchase of electricity, but this was not indicated in advance. It could be a tip that this information is also clearly indicated on the page of the landlord so that you know what to expect. Moreover, the installation used seemed to me not really in terms of safety. There were several people who took electricity from 1 contact from which extension cables were linked several times).

I just want to say that all this together made this Campspace more like a 'regular' mini-camping for us, but without the facilities (sufficient sanitary facilities, connections for electricity, ...) that you have on a regular for the same price.

We are willing to pay a fair price for a "Campspace", but the rental price requested here was in line with what you would pay at a regular campsite, so you expect some value for money.

The hosts themselves were friendly and helpful. However, because of the above, we could not get rid of the impression that it had a commercial approach rather than really wanting to offer a nice and quiet place in nature.

Finally, I think we must have been in the same place, just with a few other "rest seekers", that this would have been a completely different experience.

I will certainly not write off Campspace, but next time I will make sure that we are much better informed about what we can expect from the place!

Host Tony & Nadine has responded

Hi guys!

Thank you for your extensive review, we always learn from that and it’s greatly appreciated :) It would have helped us even more if you had shared your experiences on site. Then we could have assisted you immediately where necessary and possible :)

It was indeed an exceptionally busy weekend and you are absolutely right that this had to do with the predicted beautiful weather on one hand (which fortunately turned out to be true) and on the other hand people are now looking for nature instead of staying indoors because of Corona, also true! A few remarks about some of the other subjects mentioned…

The ‘large group’ you referred to and who camped with you for one night were a total of 7 people. They did indeed play music in the early evening – as you mention – but they did adhere to the ‘house rules’ to keep it quiet from 10pm, we checked. We also had a conversation about this the next day in which we – also with other campers – complained about the unnecessary noise from the camps of the youth movements in the area…

Tony drives there almost daily to ask to keep it more quiet, you were aware of that. And it was indeed lucky that you brought earplugs, but sorry, that is really not our fault. In the meantime, we have informed the organization of these particular youth groups about the inconvenience, as communicated to both you and your fellow campers…

About the electricity…True this was not compliant at all, it was ‘built’ by the group of 7. Normally it is not possible to get electricity to the tent, this was an exception that you were lucky enough to take advantage of. That is the reason this is not indicated in our listing. That said, it is our – not basic – extra electricity for which we charged you a minimum amount of 5€ for 2 nights/3 days…the rest paid 5€ per night/day. Photos of the sanitary are a great tip, we will take care of it! But trust us, we are not a ‘regular’ campsite, nor do we charge the same prices, on the contrary!

And last but not least and personally…we are very happy that you appreciate us as hosts, but we regret that you think that we opened up our garden with a ‘commercial approach’. If that were the case, we would have operated a ‘real’ campsite…;D

We thought it was a nice and relaxing weekend. Overall there was a very nice relaxed atmosphere. Tony and Nadine are very warm, sweet, and helpful people. Our stay there felt like coming home and after a few hours it was clear that we are going back there anyway! The location itself was also great. We were given the freedom to choose where we would like to pitch our tent and we really appreciated this! We chose the most wild part of the garden.

Staying with Tony and Nadine in their wonderful garden was an absolute delight! It was exactly what I was looking for: quiet, a beautiful setting, a place where I could be on my own and reflect and just read without being bothered or interrupted. And although Tony and Nadine are obviously very sociable, lovely people, they understood also that I wanted to be on my own and I wanted some time just to myself. And they gave me the space I needed, which was wonderful. Every evening, I went to the open part of the field and watched the sunset over the trees. It was just a wonderful experience. And even though it was very hot during the day, because I had camped under the shade of a lovely walnut tree which was next to a weeping willow and tucked into the hedges, I never got hot. When I did decide to leave the Campspace and got up onto the road and go for a walk in the day it was just far too hot. So I left my walking to the evenings and really enjoyed it. So thank you very very much, Tony and Nadine. You really looked after this guy when he needed it and I will definitely be back. It is such a beautiful part of Belgium, with lots of lovely places to go and to see. The facilities were also very good, basic but good. Nadine and Tony made sure to keep everything clean. The fridge was very useful, especially because it was so hot everything was just perfect.

Nadine and Tony responded very quickly to the request. The same day we received an answer and our request was accepted. Nadine and Tony are very friendly and helpful to their guests, helping with explanations or reservations if needed. The camp room is a very basic old building attached to their house. There are plates and cutlery. Even in summer – bring enough blankets or sleeping bags because it feels quite cold. The bed is okay, we found the seat less comfortable, so we inflated a mattress. It said in the description that it is very quiet there and they also have guest rooms, but we never expected that there would be so many people. Certainly, in post-lockdown Covid summer 2020 that is something we wanted to take into account. It was the going and coming because there were several camping spots occupied in the garden + guests in the house + the four of us in the camp room. Durbuy is a 20 minute drive from the house. Durbuy offers several dining options. And the area around the house offers walking routes.

Very nice garden in a very nice area where you can walk, cycle, and mountain bike. We were received very warmly by Nadine and Tony. Communication with them in advance was very smooth. The garden is beautiful and large, with a cozy seating area and several nice camping spots. There is a shower, toilet, and you can use a refrigerator. The demand for camping spots was high during our stay, which means that it was a bit too busy compared to the facilities. But we enjoyed the garden, the friendly reception, and nice environment.

Maison Sax is a wonderful place in the middle of nature! We had booked 2 nights and booked 3 additional nights. Because what else could we wish for?! The garden is beautiful, there are several beautiful tent spots. Cosy with a few other campers but still very quiet. Tony and Nadine are wonderfully sweet and hospitable. In the sanitary building there is also a refrigerator you can use, nice. Recommended!
