About this campspace

This is primitive camping with a surprise twist! Our region in South Holland might best be described as "textbook Holland".

It is characterised by meadows with cows, farms, rivers, dykes, ditches, willows, storks and sleepy villages. UNESCO world heritage site the Kinderdijk (famous windmills) is just around the corner, along with a number of picturesque small cities and villages.

Our mini campsite is next to the River Lek. We have a truly spacious garden, an orchard and a modest bit of woodland that provides plent of privacy, if that's what you're after.
Bicycles can be parked in the shed, which can also be used for cooking on a wood stove or enjoying a drink.

The river is suited for swimming and the nearest 'beach' is a mere three minute walk. If you know how to command a Canadian canoe on a current you may use our canoe also.

You can order various beverages and food from us, like cold beer, wine, freshly baked bread, espresso etc. as the nearest supermarket is quite a walk. We also offer buckets of iced water for cooling down your own drinks (free) if you wish.

We've recently established a sleeping accommodation in the woodshed which accommodates at least two adults.

You may also spread your sleeping bag on the straw next to this glamporious addition for the most rustic sleeping experience ever.

Experience the best camping South Holland has to offer!

My name is Alexander a.k.a. Lex, living in the countryside, small house big plot with a garden, orchard, woodland; from rather civilised to rather jungle. Which tells something about myself too, getting muddy from working in the garden upto being fuzzy about food.
Just changed the name of the site into KitchenCamping as somehow we seem to attract people with an inbtetrest in food and cooking.

Apart from camping with a tent or your own accommodation on wheels you can stay in one of the the prehistoric caravans and in the shed. Where we also have facilities like shower toilet and pub/mancave.

Tips

  • Prepare your meal on our wood fired stove or use our wood fired oven to make a pizza. We can also serve meals and breakfast upon request.

  • World heritage site Kinderdijk is nearby.

Well, as a mess I had completely booked the wrong day. So I was on the "sidewalk" with my daughter a day early. Fortunately, a very flexible owner who managed to give it a twist. Still had a very pleasant stay in a beautiful unique place! Awesome chickens by the way!

Nice campsite with good atmosphere in beautiful surroundings. (Sanitary) facilities are basic but fine. Alexander is a nice host!

How was the contact with the host?
Contact went smoothly.

Tips for new guests?
Swimming in the Lek from the beach, a few minutes' walk to the right from the campsite over the dike, was a special experience! Nieuwpoort is nice to stroll through and grab a terrace, Schoonhoven on the other side (with the ferry) is a larger town with nice shops and terraces.

Lovely quiet campsite, there is ample space, no permanent pitches and plenty of shade. Surrounded by greenery. The plumbing is basic but does what it should and is clean. You can possibly sit in the hut in bad weather.
A few minutes' walk away is a beach where you can swim in good weather and enjoy the sunset. The bus stop (to eg Utrecht or Schoonhoven) is nearby.

How was the contact with the host?
Lex and his family are very friendly and helpful. Lex likes to come and have a chat. Check-in and check-out was very flexible.

Tips for new guests?

We had a lovely few days camping on Alexander's campsite. It is a beautiful setting, a green field (orchard-like), surrounded by fields, farms, animals, and a river nearby, all very natural. The facilities are good and are in keeping with the surroundings (mostly made from natural products) and perfect for the campsite (the shower is good!). We ordered bread every morning which was delicious and fresh eggs and cheese can be bought from the farms nearby. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Thank you Alexander!

How was the contact with the host?
The host replied to any queries very quickly.

Nice place. Green grass, sheep, chickens and cows around. Coffee capsules as a compliment. Pretty good “village” breakfast with warm and crunchy baguette/croissant, cheese, butter, eggs and ham. You can make a fire in front of your accomodation (ev. accomodation have own campfire spots, no need to gather in common place).

How was the contact with the host?
Host (Alexander) is calm hospitable gentleman, we’ve agreed with him to postpone our checkout time with no extra cost.

It was a great experience overall, exactly what we wanted for our stay. Lex has created a great space in nature for nature-lovers. Of course it's rough and rugged, but that's how we wanted it so it couldn't be better. Lex is fun, playful and ironic, we appreciated the interaction with him, when we arrived we shared a drink and a chat at the wooden shed cabin, which we really enjoy. What a character!!

We could light up our campfire, which was something we wanted and I recommend ordering breakfast at Lex, that can be either served at the cabin or at the main building where the kitchen area is. The place has all that is needed, all is simple but functional, of course if the visitor comes with an adventure mindset! The toilet area and shower are clean, and there's all that's needed also to cook/ rinse/ warm up food. We weren't so lucky with the weather but the stay was indeed fun and just how we wanted it to be.

How was the contact with the host?
It all went very smooth. Nice and resourceful via phone and whatsapp, answered to my questions on the portal prior to the trip.

Tips for new guests?
Make sure you bring a flashlight for walking from the roulotte/caravan to the WC! And flip flops to move comfortably from/to the main area. And if available, ask for the bigger caravan, more spacious and comfortable especially in risk for poor weather.

A place where you can find peace between meadows in the lee of the dike. Between the willows surrounded by chickens, goats and other animals you put up your tent and are one with nature. And then back to basics, lighting a fire, cooking on the same open fire.

Camping with a twist. To find out, you have to experience the camping experience yourself. Completely different than usual. Everything super-simple, but how? Alexander (Lex) place is simply gorgeous. the campsite is located on their property and it's very private. they also offer an outside shed where you have a sink, a private bathroom, and a shower (hot water included). What a lovely place! "A surprising twist" is an appropriate recommendation on all fronts for this beautiful and surprising place.
At the time of our arrival, the orchard was partly the setting of an "Italian-looking" family party.
Friendly and cosy. Our host Alex left his family for a while and led us through his different domains. The barn that also houses the outdoor kitchen, shower and toilet, a vintage caravan hidden behind campfire wood, camping spots in the orchard, and hidden spots between bushes, willows and reeds for those seeking tranquility.
It was clear that a nature lover was standing in front of us who can serve his guests with various and surprising places
Sustainability, creativity in the reuse of materials, attention to the outdoors radiates from everywhere.
We came for rest and chose a place afterwards between the willow bushes. Here we wouldn't bother anyone with our bonfire.
The next morning we were also surprised with a delicious fresh croissant.
We will definitely come back here. Johan and Wilma

How was the contact with the host?

Went here as a group of friends and part of a scouting for a midweek and loved every hour of it. The surroundings are beautiful and this applies to both nature and architecture, in addition, the location of this camping site is ideal because you are far enough away from the crowds to relax, but you are not driving half an hour to the closest village to be found. Although we initially had the idea that there was not much to do in the area, we were pleasantly surprised by the many activities that are possible. The camping site itself was neatly tidy on arrival and facilities neatly clean. Everything went very relaxed, which created a lot of freedom (and this is secretly nicer than when a list of rules is pushed under your nose). Fixed places were not really the case here, so you can choose your favorite place within the site and decorate it yourself. All in all, one of the best camping spots we've come across so far, where you're free to do your own thing and definitely recommended to the younger camper.

How was the contact with the host?
The contact with Alexander went well, although he was also enjoying his holiday at the same time, everything was well prepared and arranged with temporary replacements where we could go with our questions. He can always be reached online and usually responds within every hour via Campspace.
Dear Alexander, on behalf of the group of friends from Sprundel, thank you very much for making this great camping experience possible.

Tips for new guests?
The water is very close by and if you like activities on or by the water, it is definitely recommended to take advantage of this. In addition, it is recommended for campers who also like to sit on the terrace to go to cafe De Dam, both in the afternoon and in the evening, a very nice and beautiful location. Furthermore, we can certainly recommend a regular walking tour, we have not regretted it.

The contact with the host was good. He often came to say hello and start a conversation and if there were anything unclear, we could always contact him.

We were given a short tour of the site and were allowed to pick a spot ourselves.
We thought it was a nice place to stand. Sunny spots and lots of trees for some shade. At the back of the train are some small private places where you can pitch a tent. There were chickens roaming the campground and there were two cats. Lex and Astrid are always present so you can ask them questions and especially Lex likes a chat. It was also very nice that Lex cooked for us. And the breakfast the next morning was very tasty with freshly baked bread rolls and delicious cheese.

We went cycling along the Lek and through the nice villages in the area, saw many windmills and encountered nice terraces. Due to the beautiful weather it was very busy on the dike, especially many motorcyclists, but everyone took each other into account.

Want to relax for a weekend? Then I recommend spending the night in Alexander's vintage caravan! After a warm welcome we were given an extensive tour of the site after which we could settle down in the caravan. The atmosphere on site is very relaxed and warm.
In addition to the fact that the caravan looks super nice, it is also fully equipped. A nice veranda with chairs, a fridge, a nice bed, a heating element in case it gets cold and enough space for playing fun board games. Furthermore, the other facilities such as toilet and shower are clean and convenient to use. Everything on the site has been cleverly thought through by Alexander with an eye on the wishes of his guests. In addition to all these facilities, we were also spoiled with a delicious breakfast in the morning.
A visit to the Alexander site is recommended if you are looking for a relaxing weekend and if you want to immerse yourself in traditional Dutch sores. A walk over the Nieuwpoort city walls and a tour through nice villages such as Otterland and Molengraaf is highly recommended. As well as a visit to the well-known Kinderdijk. All in all! Top location for a relaxing weekend!

Alexander, the owner, briefly showed where we could shower and where we could get a cold drink, but it was mostly freedom and joy. The whole weekend he turned out to be very hospitable. Also about checking in and out (we arrived earlier and stayed longer) he was not difficult at all. You were allowed to pick a spot in the orchard yourself. We chose sheep, cows and horses as neighbors and at night we were kept out of sleep by the frogs. Glad we were allowed to make a campfire. There was more than enough wood. Of course the bottle of bubbles made the evening complete at the campfire. The next day we decided to cycle spontaneously along the Lek. Alexander had two extra bicycles and he has the bicycle tires pumped up for us. The area sometimes looks a bit French. At least there is a lot of nature. When we came back from cycling, a cold drink was waiting for us again. We will definitely camp here again

From the moment we approached the dyke we immediately felt relaxed; what a beautiful surrounding! While enjoying our welcome drink our host told us very enthusiastically about his Campspace and his own camping experiences. Afterwards, we took a tour through the wide and green garden. This Campspace has a few options; set up your own tent, spend the night in a already set-up tipi, caravan or wooden mancave. We decided to set up our own tent, which was hard to choose because there are so many beautiful spots. We picked a spot all the way in the back surrounded by trees and next to a little creek. From this spot you have a beautiful view overlooking the fields. The rest of the day we started a fire and cooking some delicious food. There are plenty of options to cook, from open fire to brick oven. Also, the host loves to cook so we let them surprise us. Until late in the evening we enjoyed the coziness. The next morning we went for a run; so many beautiful paths towards cute little villages. The well deserved shower overlooks the garden, how nice?! Afterwards, we enjoyed breakfast in the sun and in the afternoon we even went canoeing on the nearby river de Lek. In short; we really enjoyed our time here and had some good laughs. We will definitely come back!

How was the contact with the host?
I felt very welcome with Alex: he welcomed us, showed us around. He hinted at a nice windmill nearby, which was very interesting for grandson Sef. (and for grandpa too).

And showed us with his partner how to drink a beer in the evening sun. Tribute.
In the morning I was even offered another cup of cappuccino.

What a great experience and what we enjoyed. Lex and Astrid are not people who are 13 in a dozen. That is what makes camping at the Foodbazaar campsite so beautiful. What a beautiful spot on the Lek, we had the site to ourselves; view over the sheep and cows of farmer Bram, who comes back later in this story. A tour of the site and then the question 'would you like something to drink'. And so began a special afternoon and evening with Alexander and Astrid. What a story, fun, a tasty chicken from the green egg followed by homemade plum liqueur (or was it pears?). At 01.00 we were in our bed. On the day of departure, farmer Bram came by to pull us up the dike; our 30 year old camper couldn't make it on its own. After having bought some delicious types of cheese from farmer Bram, we could continue our journey with a full gearbox. The reception by Lex was most cordial. Together with him I selected the best pitch for my bus camper, because the ground is very clayey and sometimes someone gets stuck. With his directions it was no problem for my small (5m) bus camper, but for a bigger one?
Lex is very hospitable, has set up a room with a kettle, coffee maker, wood-burning stove and a fridge that you can unpack, he likes to open a bottle of wine with you and have a chat.
It was a lovely place to stand; On weekdays, however, heavy freight traffic drives over the dike early in the morning and the neighbor is working on his farm from early in the morning until late at night.
Wonderful environment for cycling! We recommend taking the ferry to Schoonhoven via Nieuwpoort, then cycling via Bergambacht to Vlist and back. It is also beautiful to cycle along the Lekdijk and the sunsets are beautiful while sitting on the dike. Had a great 3 days here!

This Campspace was great! Beautiful grounds and a relaxed atmosphere. Delicious breakfast (and coffee!). Next to the river Lek with a beach at a few minutes walk, so nice possibility to swim and cool off. Sleep at night with the calming sound of birds, cows, sheep, and the trees that rustle. The caravan was a bit too hot to sleep in during the heatwave (in combination with many mosquitoes), so we set up our own tent to spend the nights. Lex is a super nice host who doesn't bother about anything and cooks deliciously. Really recommended!

Lovely place with spacious pitches, space for sitting in the shade and / or sun, just what you feel like. Nice and quiet, beautiful surroundings. We look back on it with great pleasure. However, the price is very high for what you get: The facilities are at least certainly compared to the price, about twice as expensive as an average campsite. The use of the fireplace must be paid separately, even if you use your own charcoal. If the price was lower we would come back. A longer stay is really too expensive.

Nice terrain with various possibilities, also very suitable for tents (which is becoming a rarity). Beautiful surroundings. However, there were at least 30 guests that the sanitary facilities were not designed for (1 shower, 1 toilet). Sort of kitchen/dishwashing facilities very dark and clumsy. Don't know if cleaning was ever done, impression not. Both sanitary and kitchen not clean. No large waste container which led to pile up of garbage bags with attraction to vermin (rat spotted). Still, I would like to come back at a less busy time because there is a nice, relaxed atmosphere and it is such a beautiful place.

The place itself is nice and quiet (hum of the boats in the background) It's just not nice if you have a bigger camper (mine is 6.7 m). The site is not suitable for larger campers, because the terrain is soft - we got stuck and had to arrange a tractor ourselves in the area - and in the middle of the site there is an elevation that is steeper than it seems - bumper damage if consequence-. The entrance and exit is very steep (it is also a dike) and not everyone likes this. Therefore only 3 stars. With a tent / camper bus it is a top spot!

How was the contact with the host?
On site, the contact was nice (he came after 6 pm). Only I have not had an answer to my messages prior to our visit and also when we arrived (at 13.00). As a result, the necessary information about the place where I could stand was not known to me.

The campsite is in a nice spot with lots of greenery and space. The amenities are fine. However, the communication beforehand left a lot to be desired. Little to no response to my messages, as the owner was on vacation. The day itself I received a message that the key to the caravan would be lost and that there was no solution.... Since we were already on the road, we drove on anyway. Arriving there, the replacement indicated that he knew nothing about a key, but that there had been double-booked. In the end we slept with three people in the two-person caravan, which was obviously not very comfortable. I have never heard from the owner since our stay.
It's a nice place, but with the very annoying and difficult state of affairs I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Definitely not recommended. Bad host, no explanation, the caravan was not cleaned or viewed before staying. There were loose contact lenses, dirt, other people's stuff everywhere. The fridge and stove didn't work, this hadn't been tested so we couldn't cook or store our food. Host made up all kinds of excuses with no solutions and certainly hadn't prepared our stay.

How was the contact with the host?
Contact was poor, a week and a half in advance no contact could be made, our calls and messages were not answered. When we arrived, the host did not know that we would be coming that day, did not know where we were staying and at half past six in the evening had not even looked at or cleaned the caravan before our stay. After this we had to wait hours for the caravan to be supposedly clean, while at the same time the host took extensive time for beer and wine and had us wait outside.
