Micro camping among the butterflies
About this campspace #s002402
Sleeping among the butterflies, watching moths with a glass of wine, having breakfast in the sea of flowers: it doesn't get much more fun! During spring and summer, the observatory can be rented for overnight stays, so you not only have all the time to make beautiful observations, but also make use of the observation equipment, games and microscopes. Taking a little care of the caterpillars and butterflies is certainly part of it! The site has several locations where you can eat in a sustainable and circular way. The observatory is an expedition trailer suitable for 2 people. This trailer has been specially designed and is ideal for outdoor living. outside the trailer there are also the butterfly breeding boxes! If there are caterpillars in this, you are expected to take care of this. How that should be explained of course! You can release butterflies that come out of their pupa. Of course there is no guarantee on caterpillars and butterflies, that's nature.

Meet Nicky, your host
On arrival at the NoordOogst site, where the Butterfly Garden 'Mot in Mokum' is located, we were immediately surprised. The NoordOogst site is an urban agriculture project in Amsterdam-Noord, where they mainly produce food and drinks in a sustainable way. The entire NoordOogst site provides a very quiet, safe and relaxed atmosphere. We received a warm welcome from the host Nicky. Years ago he set up his Butterfly Garden 'Mot in Mokum' (MIM) here because of his passion for butterflies, caterpillars and flowers. And that can also be seen in everything. Nicky built the trailer you sleep in at MIM all by himself. This is clearly visible in the workmanship, as well as the attributes that can be found in the trailer. For example, there is a butterfly poster, you can view various butterflies under a microscope, there are many magazines and books and folders about butterflies. Nicky has written very clear booklets about instructions for the trailer, butterflies and caterpillars. Read this especially at the beginning, so many things will become clearer. The trailer has everything you need. A kettle, sandwich maker, gas burner, crockery, sink, toilet, a lovely bed and various specialty beers, which are also brewed on the NoordOogst site. There are 2 baskets under the lovely bed. In one basket there are different games, in the other there is an arrangement with which you can spot butterflies at night. Definitely worth it and great fun to do! To top it all off, the trailer features a warm outdoor shower, which is as good as it sounds! The trailer is surrounded by the beautiful flower garden, where various types of animals can be seen. The 3 seating areas in the sea of flowers allow you to fully enjoy the view. There is a two-person go-kart next to the trailer. We have explored the entire terrain with the go-kart and I would definitely recommend doing this! Drive past the sports club to the pigs, walk along the vineyards and play in the nature playground. A big highlight was spotting moths with the moth arrangement under the bed. We have seen many butterflies and other types of rare insects. In the Dollhouse, next to the Butterfly Garden, there are three breeding boxes where caterpillars of butterflies are grown. When a caterpillar has emerged, you are lucky enough to release the butterfly yourself in the garden! We were allowed to do this and it was very special. Nicky knows a lot about his flowers, caterpillars and butterflies and has also explained a lot to us about this. Very inspiring and fun to hear all his stories. The Butterfly Garden, the sea of flowers, the trailer, the Doll's House, the go-kart, the outdoor shower, spotting moths, the NoordOogst terrain, the surroundings. Words do not reflect how much fun we had it, and I would certainly recommend visiting this beautiful place to everyone.
The night in the butterfly garden was great. Previously I had email contact with Nicky and it went very well. He gave all kinds of tips and explained how we got there, how everything worked and what is fun to do. The Mot butterfly garden in Mokum is a very special place to spend the night in peace and surrounded by nature. When we arrived we spoke to the host Nicky and immediately had a very nice conversation about his garden. Nice to hear about his passion and how he set up everything himself! The observatory we slept in was neat, cozy, and a very creative place to sleep! We had a lot of fun in the garden and saw all kinds of beautiful butterflies and caterpillars. The (warm) outdoor shower in the middle of the garden made the experience complete. It was also nice to take a tour of the North Harvest site and meet the other initiators. We were made to feel very welcome!
