Winter camping, how and where?

I can already hear you thinking “it is way too cold”. I also did not expect winter camping to become so popular. It may seem like a challenge, but it actually isn’t.

Once you know how to deal with the cold, real winter campers say it is very cozy. One person prefers to be with more people, others want to spend the day completely private and romantic. Both can be great fun, but how do you keep the cold out? We have some tips for you!

  1. With the winter-ready accommodations and back-to-basic winter camping spots, there is always the option to make a fire. So indulge! But don’t forget to bring the marshmallows.
  2. There are a number of ways to keep warm at night. Bring an electric blanket, snuggle up close, put a bottle of warm water in your sleeping bag and put on your grandma’s homemade socks.
  3. Make sure that your feet and head do not get cold. That usually makes a big difference. A balaclava and warm thick socks help enormously. In the afternoon it is always very nice to wear really good winter shoes.
  4. If you go with the tent, bring a tent stove, make sure that ventilation in the tent is good. This way the air stays fresh but still warm.

Of course there is more to it than just the cold, it is not only a problem. It can also be a huge benefit. Autumn makes nature so different from summer. To see that slow change remains special. From the orange, yellow trees to snow white nature. Warmth in cold weather, in whatever way, provides coziness. It’s romantic in its own way.

The activities are also different in Winter. You often hear winter campers going to Austria or the Ardennes for skiing. But you also increasingly hear that people go hiking. Camping is generally about taking a break. You are in a different place than you are used to. So whatever you do, sledding or skiing, hiking or staying warm in the cottage, it is all about the beautiful surroundings you are in.

The choice of where to stay turns out to be quite difficult. Which campsites are open? What kind of accommodation? That is why we created two brand new theme pages: Discover winter camping and Winter proof accommodations. This way you can easily find your style of winter camping. At one you will find luxury camping spots with wooden huts, cozy tents and nice caravans, all ready for you. The other one is more back-to-basic, bring your own gear or borrow it and make your camping experience a success!
