Campspace camper sites for different vehicles

There are many different types of camping vehicles available on the market, each with their own unique set of features and benefits. So, which one is right for you? Here's a quick rundown of the key differences between campervans, RVs, motorhomes and caravans, followed by examples of where you can stay in each.

Campervans

Campervans are smaller, more compact camping vehicles that are easy to maneuver and park, making them ideal for exploring narrow European streets and squeezing into tight parking spaces. They usually have all the basic amenities you need for camping, such as a kitchenette, sleeping area and bathroom. Oftentimes, campervan owners convert their vans into living vehicles themselves and join the thriving #vanlife movement of digital nomads.

RVs

RVs are larger camping vehicles that offer more space and more amenities than campervans. While the acronym stands for 'recreational vehicle' in the US and UK, in Europe, they are typically called 'campers'. They usually have a kitchen, bathroom, living area and sleeping area. Some RVs even come with additional features like a fireplace or outdoor entertaining area. However, they can be more difficult to drive and park, and may not be well-suited for extended periods of time on the road.

Motorhomes

A motorhome is the biggest most luxurious form of RV. Motorhomes are the largest type of camping vehicle, offering plenty of space for travelling and all the amenities of home. They usually have a kitchen, bathroom, living area and sleeping area, as well as additional storage space. They're perfect for long road trips or for setting up at a campsite for an extended stay. However, they can be expensive to purchase and operate, and may require specialised knowledge to maintain. This English term is used more generally to refer to RVs in the UK.

Where to stay in your motorhome: Enjoy peace and quiet at Sebastian's secluded motorhome site in Germany, where there is plenty of space to park your motorhome, no matter the size! Enjoy the BBQ and the stunning forest view.

Caravans

Caravans are towed behind a vehicle and offer a comfortable way to camp. They come in a variety of sizes and usually have all the basic amenities you need for camping, such as a kitchenette, sleeping area and bathroom. The word caravan comes from the Persian karwan meaning "group of desert travellers." It has since evolved to also be a term used for a towed camping vehicle with a living area in it. This one can be confusing though – some people do refer to RVs as caravans too!

Where to stay in your caravan: Make memories to last a lifetime at Carlos's caravan site in Santa Marina de Valdeón, Spain. This view must really be seen to be believed. Go canyoning, climbing or hiking for the ultimate active holiday in Spain's beautiful mountains.

Activities to take part in at your camper site

If you're lucky enough to be spending some time in a camper parked up in nature, make the most of it! Here are some ideas for activities to keep you busy.

If the weather is good:

  • Get out and explore your surroundings on foot or by bike. Take a map and see how far you can get without using any roads!
  • Pack a picnic lunch and find a spot to enjoy it with a view.
  • If weather permits, go for a swim in a nearby lake or river.
  • See if you can spot any wildlife. If you're lucky, you might see something really rare!
  • Climb up to the top of a hill or mountain for views of the surrounding area.
  • Visit any tourist attractions that are nearby

If the weather is bad:

  • Stay cosy inside your camper and read a good book or listen to an interesting podcast.
  • Organize all your travel photos and make a scrapbook or photo album to remember your trip by.
  • Write about your experiences in a travel journal. This can be fun to look back on later on!
  • Cook up some tasty meals using only ingredients from your camper's pantry. See what culinary creations you can come up with!
  • Play some card games or board games with your travel companions.

After a long hike or bike trip (or a short one), it is always the best feeling to settle and relax. Sitting outside on a chair, watching the sunset with a plate of grilled veggies or a delicious homemade salad. That's when you really feel disconnected from the busy city life and appreciate time with your family, your friends, with yourself, or with your partner.

A camper site generally offers more safety, cosiness, and space than a motorhome parking lot. In addition, at a camper site, you often have a little more in the way of facilities. A mini camper site has the advantage of being more quiet, without losing that holiday feeling. The perfect balance for a pleasant stay! The lovely hosts of our camper sites know their areas well, so it's always a good idea to engage them in conversation and ask about the best local cafes, shops, or restaurants.

Frequently asked questions about camper sites

How do I find a camper pitch?

You can find the biggest variety of camper sites and pitches on Campspace, especially if you are looking for small-scale, charming plots. Enter your desired destination and dates into the search bar, along with the number of travellers and tick the box for your size of vehicle. The search results will show you a variety of campspace suited to your needs! If you want to make sure there is a hot shower, or any added amenities on site, add these as further filters.

How long am I allowed to stay at a camper site?

How long you're allowed to stay at a camper site depends on the campsite or host. Some people prefer to spend months parked up at a campsite and others use a camper site as a pit stop along a road trip. You can find both the minimum and maximum stay rules per campspace on each campspace's listing.

How much does a camper pitch cost?

A camper pitch is usually very affordable, ranging from €10 to €40 a night, depending on available amenities or location.

How big is a motorhome pitch?

The size of a motorhome pitch varies greatly! On a traditional commercial campsite, you may be relegated to a small portion of land, slightly bigger than the vehicle itself. Nowadays, you'll find camper sites in large fields, people's gardens, on farms and in forests, with no strict perimeters per camper pitch. Just take a look at your desired pitch's photos to get an idea of how spacious it is.

Do you need an electric pitch for a campervan?

While a camper site with an electricity hookup is ideal for running or charging the appliances in your vehicle, you don't necessarily need one to sleep somewhere comfortably for the night. On Campspace you can filter for 'electricity hookup' when browsing camper sites, so that you see the full selection of camper sites with electricity available.

Where can I take a camper in the Netherlands?

You can take your camper anywhere in the Netherlands, but need to book a designated place to park. You can do this by browsing our Camper sites in the Netherlands page below.
